Daily Readings for Wednesday the 13th September 2023

Prayer
-Give thanks to God for the Bible, its inspiration and preservation for us to read it today. (2 Timothy 3.16, Proverbs 30.5.)
-Give thanks to God that we have easy access to the Scripture in English, in our mother tongue.
-Pray the Lord would bless us as we study the Bible through the ministry this coming year. That as we work through a book of the Bible the Lord would continue to help us to grasp God's truth.
-Pray for the Lunchtime outreach service and those who attend; pray that more from the offices nearby and Christians who commute are able to join us.

2 Samual 8) - Preface - David subdueth the Philistines, and maketh the Moabites tributary: He smiteth Hadadezer and the Syrians. Toi king of Hamath sendeth his son with presents to bless David; who dedicateth the presents, and the spoil which he had taken, to God. He putteth garrisons in Edom. His good reign; a list of his principal officers.
2 Samuel 9) - Preface - David upon enquiry is informed by Ziba of Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan; whom he sendeth for, and kindly entertaineth at his table for Jonathan's sake: he restoreth him all the family possessions of Saul, and maketh Ziba his farmer.
2 Samuel 8-9
Preface - Paul declareth that he did not use human learning and eloquence in preaching the gospel to his converts, that their faith, being built on the testimony of the spirit, and on miracles, might be solely ascribed to God. The gospel doth contain God's wise, but secret, counsel, for bringing men to glory; which no natural abilities could discover, but the spirit of God only, by which it was revealed to the apostles. Upon this account both the doctrine and its teachers are held in disesteem by the mere natural man, who is not duly qualified to judge of and discern them.

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. - Psalm 119 v 18
If ye be led by the Spirit, ye will love the Bible. You will say, oh, 'How love I Thy law, it is my meditation all the day.' Be determined to learn something new out of the Bible every day. 'I have lost a world of time,' said one, when dying. 'If I had another year to live, I would spend it in reading David's Psalms and Paul's Epistles.' Oh, be wiser in your Bibles than in the newspaper. What good will all that ever you read in the newspaper do when you are dying? Alas, for my beloved and, when the newspaper drives the Bible form its place by the cottage fire.
