Prayer
-Give thanks to God for the Bible, its inspiration and preservation for us to read it today. (2 Timothy 3.16, Proverbs 30.5.)
-Give thanks to God that we have easy access to the Scripture in English, in our mother tongue.
-Pray the Lord would bless us as we study the Bible through the ministry this coming year. That as we work through a book of the Bible the Lord would continue to help us to grasp God's truth.
-Pray for the Lunchtime outreach service and those who attend; pray that more from the offices nearby and Christians who commute are able to join us.

Daily readings
Preface - The battle at Gilboa; wherein Saul's army being defeated, and his sons slain, he and his armourbearer kill themselves. The Philistines take possession of the towns deserted by the Israelites. They insult over the dead bodies of Saul and his sons. The men of Jabesh-gilead recover the bodies by night, burn them, and bury their bones at Jabesh.
1 Samuel 31
Preface - Paul exhorteth the Corinthians to follow him, as he did Christ. He praiseth them for observing the rules he had given them; and forbiddeth men to pray or prophesy with heads covered, and women with heads uncovered; the covering of the head being a token of subjection. He blameth them for abuses in their religious assemblies, particularly for their divisions, and profanation of the Lord's supper. He remindeth them of the first institution thereof, and sheweth the danger of partaking of it unworthily.
1 Corinthians 11

A Puritans Catechism

Q69-What is faith in Jesus Christ?

A - Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is set forth in the gospel.

Peace perfect peace
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ - 1 Thessalonians 5 v 23

God is to you the 'very God of peace'. Once He was to you the God of vengeance, but now he is the very God of peace. You can look back on a time when you lived under the wrath of the great God that made you. God was angry with you every day. You were altogether born in sin. Your heart was altogether depraved. You heaped up wrath against the day of wrath. Oh, do you not wonder that you are not in hell!
But you have fled to the bleeding Lamb, guilty and perishing. You have taken shelter in His wounds. You have this day openly accepted Him. Oh, if this be true, then God is the very God of peace to you. If I could this day go up into heaven, and open the books, and look into the records of the world, I would find your sins all blotted out, as a thick cloud; I would look up in the faced of God and see Him smiling over you, saying, Thy sins and thine iniquities will I remember no more.
Dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, rejoice evermore, for the God of vengeance is to you the very God of peace.
