Daily Readings

Preface - Absalom by fair speeches and courtesies stealeth the hearts of the men of Israel. Under pretence of a vow he obtaineth leave to go to Hebron: where he formeth a dangerous conspiracy. Upon the news David fleeth from Jerusalem: Ittai, though a stranger, will not leave him. Zadok and Abiathar are sent back with the ark. David and his company go up mount Olivet weeping. He prayeth God to defeat Ahithophel's counsel. Hushai is sent back with instructions how to act for David's service.
2 Samuel 15
Preface-Paul extolleth the liberal contributions of the Macedonian churches for the relief of the brethren in Judaea: and recommendeth the same charity to the Corinthians, as well befitting their other graces, enforced by Christ's example, consistent with the alacrity they had already expressed therein, and a precedent which might in time be of use to themselves. He letteth them know the willingness of Titus to come and further this good work among them; and commendeth him to their love, together with the brethren, men of special worth, who were sent with him on the same errand.
2 Corinthians 8

A Puritans Catechism
Q81-What is required for the worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper?

A-It is required of them who would worthily partake of the Lord's Supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body, of their faith to feed upon him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience, lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves.

A harp of praise
How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? - Psalm 137 v 4

Every believer has a harp. Every heart that has been made new is turned into a harp of praise. The mouth is filled with laughter, the tongue with divinest melody. Every true Christian loves praise; the holiest Christians love it most. But when the believer falls into sin and darkness, his harp is on the willows, and he cannot sing the Lord's song, for he is in a strange land.
