Daily Reading
Preface - The distress of Jerusalem by a siege, and the sudden destruction of the invaders by the hand of God. The Jews reported for their insensibility, and hypocrisy, which is threatened with judgment. A promise of better things in succeeding times.
Isaiah 29
Preface - The apostle, after a kind salutation to Gaius, testifieth his joy in his piety, commending his hospitality toward the preachers of the gospel. He condemneth Diotrephes, and threateneth him for his ambitious opposition. The ill example of such is not to be followed. He beareth testimony to the good character of Demetrius. He hopeth to see Gaius shortly, and concludeth with salutations.

3 John

Daily Light - Morning
We look for the Saviour.

The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. - We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall appear the second time without sin unto salvation. - And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
Phil. 3.20; Titus 22.1-14; 2 Pe. 3.13-14
He. 9.28; Isa. 25.9

Daily Light - Evening
So run, that ye may obtain.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without. - Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

I press toward the mark. - I...so run, not as uncertainly... I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means ...I myself should be a castaway.

The fashion of this world passeth away.

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent. - Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Co. 9.24; Pro. 22.13; He. 12.1-2
2 Co. 7.1
Phil. 3.14; 1 Co. 9.26,27
1 Co. 7.31
2 Pe. 3.13-14; 1 Pe. 1.13

A Puritans Catechism
Q 81 - What is required for the worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper

A - It is required of them who would worthily partake of the Lord's Supper, that they examine themselves of their knowledge to discern the Lord's body, of their faith to feed upon him, of their repentance, love, and new obedience, lest, coming unworthily, they eat and drink judgment to themselves.

The 1689
Baptist Confession of Faith
Of Christ the Mediator
Chapter 8
PPARAGRAPH 6
Although the price of redemption was not actually paid by Christ until after His incarnation, yet the virtue, efficacy, and benefit thereof were communicated to the elect in all ages, successively from the beginning of the world, in and by those promises, types, and sacrifices wherein He was revealed, and signified to be the seed which should bruise the serpent's head;34 and the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,35 being the same yesterday, and today and for ever.36

34 1 Cor. 4:10; Heb. 4:2; 1 Pet. 1:10–11
35 Rev. 13:8
36 Heb. 13:8

Robert Murray M'Cheyne  - God Makes A Path - Daily Devvotional Readings
Put out the fire
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Romans 8 v 10

themselves The only way to put out the fire, is to let in the water of the Spirit. Brethren, you think your planning will do it; but, no, there is nothing between you and the deepest fall into sin, but the Spirit. Ah! Many do not believe this; they say, my principles, my good name, my resolutions will keep me; but, Ah! brethren, remember there is no power but the Spirit dwelling in your soul, that will keep you from sin. There are many here may say, 'I will never go back to sin, I will never go back to rhe world'  -  and, I believe, you are honsst in saying so; but stop a little, when your soul is far from Christ, when you do not have that sense of His presence that you now enjoy, and see what you will do. Ah! brethren, we must be sanctified entirely through the Spirit. If there be not an Almighty hand behind me, I cannot go to the Lord Jesus, I cannot keep myself from any sin.
