Daily Readings
Preface - Elijah, having tried in vain to persuade Elisha to leave him, with his mantle divideth Jordan, and they both pass over on dry ground. Elijah conditionally alloweth Elisha's request of a double portion of his spirit, and is taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Elisha seeth it, and taking up Elijah's mantle divideth again the waters of Jordan, and is acknowledged for Elijah's successor. The young prophets with difficulty obtain leave to seek for Elijah, and return without finding him. Elisha with salt healeth the unwholesome waters of Jericho. Bears destroy the children that mocked him.
2 Kings 2
Preface - Paul warneth the Thessalonians against a groundless surmise that the day of Christ was near at hand; shewing that it would be preceded by a great apostasy, and that the man of sin would be first revealed, and by his wicked impostures draw many into perdition. He repeateth his good hopes concerning them, exhorting them to stand fast in his doctrine, and praying God to comfort and stablish them in all goodness.
2 Thessalonians 2

Daily Light - Morning
Of his fulness have all we received,
and grace for grace.

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.-Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we sould be called the sons of God.

His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things. - If children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

I and my Father are one...the Father is in me, and I in him. - My Father, and your Father; and...my God, and your God. - I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one.

The church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Having...these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Jn. 1.16; Mt. 17.5; 1Jn. 3.1
He. 1.2; Ro. 8.17
Jn. 10,30,38; Jn. 20.17; Jn. 17.23
Eph. 1.22-23
2 Co. 7.1

Daily Light - Evening
The servant is not greater than his lord;
neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

There was...a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them. The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them: and they that exervise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, be that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. - Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Jesus...riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel where-with he was girded.
Jn. 13.16-17; Lu. 22.24-27; Mt. 20.28
Jn. 13.3,4-5

A Puritans Catechism
Q31 - What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life?

A- They that are effectually called to in this life partake of justification, adoption, and sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings
Arrange beforehand
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples - Luke 11 v 1

Pray to be taught to pray. Do not be content with old forms that flow from the lips only. Most Christians have need to cast their formal prayers away, to be taught to cry, Abba. Arrange beforehand what you have to pray for. Do not forget confession of sin, nor thanksgiving. Pray to get your closed lips opened in intercession - embrace the whole world and carry it within the vail.
