Daily Reading
Preface - Nahash the Ammonite making war against Jabesh-gilead proposeth very reproachful terms to the inhabitants, who petition for a respite of seven days. They send to Saul, who bringeth them succours, and smiteth the Ammonites. The people call for the death of those who had vilifield Saul, to which Saul will by no means consent. His kingdom is joyfully renewed to him at Gilgal.
1 Samuel 11
Preface - Paul professeth an unfeigned sorrow for the Jewish nation: but proveth by instances from scripture that the promise of Abraham did not necessarily include all his descendants: asserting that there is no unrighteousness in God's bestowing his unmerited bounty on whom he pleaseth: and that he was unquestionably free to suspend his judgment, where deserved, either for the more signal display of his power in taking vengeance on some, or of his mercy in calling others to glory. The calling of the Gentiles, and rejection of the Jews, foretold. Accordingly the Gentiles have attained the righteousness of faith, which the Jews refused. The cause of such refusal.
Romans 9

A Puritans catechism

Q52 - Which is the fifth commandment?
A - The fifth commandment is, Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings
Love beyond compare
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth:
for thy love is better than wine.
Song of Solomon 1 v 2

There is no love in this world like a mother's love. It is free, unbought, unselfish love. However much pain she has suffered on her Child's account however many troubles she has to bear for it, by night and by day, while it hangs upon her breast, still it is moreprecious than gold. There is something in her heart that clings to her weak, sickly, nay, even to her retarded boy. God's love to a soul in Christ is stronger than this love. The Psalmist compares it to a father's: 'Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.' And Malachi 3 v 17: 'I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.' Again, Isaiah 66 v 13: 'As one whom his other comforteth, so will I comfort you.'
