Daily Readings
Preface - Jezebel threatening Elijah's life for having slain Baal's prophets, he fleeth to Beer-sheba. In the wilderness he groweth weary of life, but being twice strengthened by food brought him by an angel, he reacheth Horeb after having fasted forty days and forty nights. At Horeb God appeareth unto him, and commissioneth him to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha. He meeteth Elisha, who taking leave of his friends followeth him.
1 Kings 19
Preface - The salutation. Paul sheweth his thankful remembrance of the Thessalonians in his prayers on account of their faith, charity and patience: applauding them for their exemplary reception of the gospel, and improvement under it.
1 Thessalonians 1

Daily Light - Morning
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. - Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. - Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord.

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. - Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? - The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

Brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. We desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. - So run, that ye may obtain.

Daily Light - Evening
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool but shoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neighter tempteth he any man: but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. - Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.

Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where...even as the garden of the LORD... Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan... But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. - (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked... The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations. - Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
Mt. 6.13; Pro. 28.26
Jas. 1.13-14; 2 Co. 6.17;
Ge. 13,10, 11, 13; 2 Pe. 2.7,9; Ro. 14.4

A Puritans Catechism
Q26 - Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist?

A - Christ's humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings
Reflect His image
He that shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly , and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6 v 8

God requires His redeemed ones to be holy. - If you are His brethren, He will have you righteous, holy men, First, He requires you to do justly - to be just in your dealings between man and man. This is one of His own glorious features. He is a just God. 'Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?' 'He is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.' Are you come to Him by Jesus? - He requires you to reflect His image. Are you His child? - you must be like Him. O brethren, be exact in your dealings. Be like you God. Take care of dishonesty; take care of trickery in business. Take care of crying up your goods when selling them, and crying them down when buying them. 'It is nought, it is nought, sayeth the buyer, but when he is gone his way, he boasteth.' It shall not be so among you. God requires you to do justly.
Secondly, He requires you to love mercy. - This is the brightest feature in the character of Christ. If you are in Christ, drink deep of His Spirit; God requires you to be merciful. The world is selfish, unmerciful. An unconverted mother has no mercy on the soul of her own child. She can see it dropping into hell without mercy. O the hellish cruelty of unconverted men. It shall not be so with you. Be merciful, as your Father in heaven is merciful.
Thirdly, He requires you to walk humbly with thy God. - Christ says, 'Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart.' If God has covered all your black sins - rebellions - backslidings - out -breakings; then never open you mouth except in humble praise. God requires this at your hand. Walk with God, and walk humbly.
