Daily Readings
Preface - Elkanah a Levite hath two wives; he goeth yearly to worship at Shiloh. He favoureth Hannah, and comforteth her, when insulted on account of her barrenness by Peninnah. Hannah in grief prayeth for a child, and voweth to give him unto the Lord. Eli mistaking, at first rebuketh, but afterward blesseth her. God remembereth Hannah; she beareth Samuel, and stayeth at home till he is weaned. She presenteth him to the Lord according to her vow.
1 Samuel 1
Preface - Paul, commending to the Romans his calling, greeteth them, and professeth his concern for, and desire of coming to see, them. He sheweth that the gospel is for the justification of all mankind through faith; and having premised that sinners in general are obnoxious to God's wrath, he describeth at large the corruptions of the Gentile world.

Q44 - Which is the second Commandment?
A - The second commandment is, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt now bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

The sanctification of the saint
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: - 1 Corinthians 1 v 30

Everyone whom Christ reconciles He makes holy, and confesses before His Father: 'Whom he justified, them he glorified'. If Christ has truly begun a good work in you, He will perform it to the day of Christ Jesus. Christ says: 'I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending.' Whenever He begins, He will make an end. Whenever He builds a stone on the foundation, He will preserve it unshaken to the end. Only make sure that you are upon the foundation - that you ae reconciled - that you have true peace with God, and then you may look across the mountains and rivers that are between now and that day, and say: 'He is able to keep me from falling.' You have but two shallow brooks to pass through - sickness and death; and He has promised to meet you, and go with you, foot for foot. A few more tears - A few more temptations - a few more agonising prayers - a few more sacraments, and you will stand with the Lamb upon Mount Zion!
