He is hospitably entertained by a Shunammite woman, and in repaymen obtaineth a son for her. The child dieth, and is restored to life at Elisha's prayer. He healeth the deadly pottate at Gilgal. He iraculously satisfieth an hundred men with twenty barley loaves. 1 Kings 4 Preface - The salutation. Timothy is put in mind of the charge before given him by Paul. The end of the commandment is charity, from which some had turned aside to teach the law which they understood not. The scope of the law was to condemn wickedness, which is the design of the gospel also. Paul blesseth God for calling him to the ministry notwithstanding his great demerit, whereby all penitent sinners that believe are assured of mercy through Christ. He urgeth Timothy to a due discharge of his trust, warning him of some who had deserted the truth, of whom Hymenaeus and Alexander had been delivered by him unto Satan. 1 Titus 1 Daily Light - Morning A man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. - Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith. - Godliness with contentment is great gain....having food and raiment let us be therewith content. Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be full, and deny thee, and take the name of my God in vain. - Give us this day our daily bread. Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? - When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Lu. 12.15; Ps. 37.16; Pro. 15.16; 1 Tim. 6.6,8 Pro. 30.8-9; Mt. 6.11 Mt. 6.25; Lu. 22.35; He. 13.5 Daily Light - Evening It is the spirit that quickeneth. The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. - That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. - Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God. - Reckon ye....yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesu Christ our Lord. The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith Of Divine Providence Chapter 6 PARAGRAPH 1 Although God created man upright and perfect, and gave him a righteous law, which had been unto life had he kept it, and threatened death upon the breach thereof, 1 yet he did not long abide in this honor; Satan using the subtlety of the serpent to subdue Eve, then by her seducing Adam, who, without any compulsion, did willfully transgress the law of their creation, and the command given to them, in eating the forbidden fruit, 2 which God was pleased, according to His wise and holy counsel to permit, having purposed to order it to His own glory. 1 Gen. 2:16–17 2 Gen. 3:12–13; 2 Cor. 11:3 Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Blessings out of buffetings These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16 v 33 It is one of the laws of Christ's kingdom, 'We must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God.' We must not reckon upon a smooth road to glory, but it will be a short one. How glad I am that you have 'received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.' Cleave closely to Jesus, that you may not have to say in a little, 'O that I had affliction back again to quicken me in prayer, and make me lie at His feet.' Trials make the promise sweet, Trials give new life to prayer; Trials bring me to His feet, Lay me low and keep me there.
