Daily Readings for Friday 23rd May 2025

23/5/2025

Daily Prayer - Friday
- Give thanks to God for many good things we enjoy and daily blessings.
- Pray the Lord would supply the needs of those in the congregation at Westminster and guide us as we help those destitute and suffering.                               Especially those we have met in the pandemic. (Numbers 6.24-26.)
- Pray for the ministry among the children and that they would know Christ from a young age. A rich blessing in this troubled world.
- Pray for the evangelistic work, that people would know the greatest blessing of all salvation by the grace of God through Christ.

Daily Reading Plan - First Year
Preface - The reubenites and Gadites plead for their inheritance on the east side of Jordan. Moses reproveth them. They offer conditions; he is content; and assigneth the land to them, and to half the tribe of Manasseh. They build cities, and conquer what remained.
Numbers 32
Preface - The Psalmist sheweth what fierce combat he had with diffidence. The victory which he had gained by considering God's great and gracious works.
Psalms 77

Daily Light - Morning
Thou shalt put the two stones upon
the shoulders of the ephod for stones of
memorial unto the children of Israel: and Aaron
shall bear their names before the LORD.

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. - Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Seeing....that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace.

The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.
Ex. 28.12; He. 7.24-25; Jude 24
He. 4.14-16
Deu. 33.12

Daily Light - Evening
On that night could not the king sleep.

Thou holdest mine eyes waking. - Who is like unto the LORD our God....who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth. - The way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known. - Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

The eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. - We know that all things work together for good to them that love God.

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Est. 6.1; Ps. 77.4; Ps. 113.5,6
Dan. 4.35; Ps. 77.19; Ps. 76.10
2 Chr. 16.9; Ro. 8.28
Mt. 10.29-30

A Puritans Catechism
Q 30 - What is effectual calling?

A - Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he does persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ freely offered to us in the gospel.

The 1689
Baptist Confession of Faith
Of Good Works
Chapter 16
PARAGRAPH 7

Works done by unregenerate men, although for the matter of them they may be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and to others;  (19)  yet because they proceed not from a heart purified by faith,  (20)  nor are done in a right manner according to the Word,  (21)  nor to a right end, the glory of God,  (22)  they are therefore sinful, and cannot please God, nor make a man meet to receive the grace from God,  (23)  and yet their neglect for them is more sinful and displeasing to God.  (24)
(19)-2 Kings 10.30; 1 Kings 21.27,29  (20)-Gen. 4.5; Heb. 11.4,6  (21)-1 Cor. 13.1  (22)-Matt. 6.2,5  (23)-Amos 5.21-22; Rom. 9.16; Titus 3.5
(24)-Job 21.14-15; Matt. 25.41-43

Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings
Open reward
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
Matthew 6 vs 3 & 4

If you give, hoping for something again, you will get nothing. You must give as a Christian gives, - cheerfully, liberally, and freely, hoping for nothing again; and then God will give you back good measure, pressed down. 'Give, and it shall be given you.'
