Daily Prayer - Wednesday
Wednesday - Give thank to God for the Bible its inspiration and preservation for us to read it today. (2 Timothy 3.16, Proverbs 30.5.) - Give thanks to God that we have easy access to the Scripture in English, in our mother tongue. - Pray the Lord would bless us as we study the Bible through the ministry this coming year. That as we work through a book of the Bible the Lord would continue to help us to grasp God's truth. - Pray for the Lunchtime outreach service and those who attend; pray that more from the offices nearby and Christians who commute are able to join us. Daily Reading Plan - First Year Preface - Elijah, having tried in vain to persuade Elisha to leave him, with his mantle divideth Jordan, and they both pass over on dry ground. Elijah conditionally alloweth Elisha's request of a double portion of his spirit and is taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Elisha seeth it, and taking up Elijah's mantle divideth again the waters of Jordan, and is acknowledged for Elijah's successor. The young prophets with difficulty obtain leave to seek for Elijah, and return without finding him. Elisha with salt healeth the unwholesome waters of Jericho. Bears destroy the children that mocked him. 2 Kings 2 Preface - Paul warneth the Thessalonians against a goundless surmise that the day of Christ was near at hand; shewing that it would be preceded by a great apostasy, and that the man of sin would be first revealed, and by his wicked impostures draw many into perdition. He repeateth his good hopes concerning them, exhorting them to stand fast in his doctrine, and praying God to comfort and stablish them in all goodness. 2 Thessalonians 2 Daily Light - Morning God is my defence. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour. - The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. - We may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? - As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. - Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. For thy name's sake lead me, and guide me. Ps. 59.9; 2 Sa. 22.2-3; Ps. 28.7 Isa. 59.19; He. 13.6 Ps. 27.1; Ps. 125.2; Ps. 63.7 Ps. 31.3 Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. - O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. - Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. - You....hath he quickened....having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. - Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Mt. 6.12; Mt. 18.21-22; Mt. 18.32-35; Eph.4.32; Col. 2.13-14; Col. 3.13 A Puritans Catechism Q61 - Which is the ninth commandment? A - The ninth commandment is, Thou not bear false witness against thy neighbour. The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith Of Divine Providence Chapter 5 PARAGRAPH 6 As for those wicked and ungodly men whom God, as the righteous judge, for former sin does blind and harden; 17 from them He not only withholds His grace, whereby they might have been enlightened in their understanding, and wrought upon their hearts; 18 but sometimes also withdraws the gifts which they had, 19 and exposes them to such objects as their corruption makes occasion of sin; 20 and withal, gives them over to their own lusts, the temptations of the world, and the power of Satan, 21 whereby it comes to pass that they harden themselves, under those means which God uses for the softening of others. 22 17 Rom. 1;24–26,28, 11:7–8 18 Deut. 29:4 19 Matt. 13:12 20 Deut. 2:30; 2 Kings 8:12–13 21 Ps. 81:11,12; 2 Thess. 2:10–12 22 Exod. 8:15,32; Isa. 6:9–10; 1 Pet. 2:7–8 Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The broken heart The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Psalm 51 v 17 No Psalm expresses more fully the experience of a penitent believing soul: - First, His humbling confession of sin, (vs. 3-5). Second, His intense desire for pardon through the blood of Christ, (v.7). Third, His longing after a clean heart, (v.10). Fourth, His desire to render something to God for all His benefits. 1. He says, I will teach transgressors thy ways. 2. My lips shall show forth thy praise. 3. He will give a broken heart, vs. 16, 17. Just as, long ago, they used to offer slain lambs in token of thanksgiving, so he says he will offer up to God a slain and broken heart. Every one of you, who has found the same forgiveness, should come to the same resolution - offer up to God this day a broken heart.
