Preface - The office of Christ. The restoration and blessedness of the church.
Isaiah 61
Preface - Christ cureth a man; calleth Matthew; justifieth himself for eating with publicans and sinners, and his disciples for not fasting; is entreated by a ruler to go and heal his daughter; healeth by the way a woman with an issue of blood; raiseth to life the ruler's daughter; giveth sight to two blind men; healeth a dumb man possessed of a devil; hath compassion on the multitudes, and teacheth his disciples to pray that God would send forth labourers into his vineyard.
Matthew 9

Daily Light - Morning
His commandments are not grievous.

This is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life. - Whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

My yoke is easy, and my burden is light. - If ye love me, keep my commandments... He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. - Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. - Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. - I delight in the law of God after the inward man.

This is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another. - Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
1 Jn. 5.3; Jn. 6.40; 1 Jn. 3.22
Mt. 11.30; Jn. 14.15,21
Pro. 3.13; Pro. 3.17; Ps. 119.165; Ro. 7.22
1 Jn. 3.23; Ro. 13.10

Daily Light - Evening
Remember not
the sins of my youth,
nor my transgressions.

I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins. - I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. - Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. - I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. - Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

Thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. - Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity?...he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. - Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood...to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Ps. 25.7; Isa. 44.22; Isa. 43.25; Isa. 1.18; Jer. 31.34; Mi. 7.19
Isa. 38.17; Mi. 7.18; Rev. 1.5,6

A Puritans Catechism

Q 30 - What is effectual calling?
A - Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he does persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ freely offered to us in the gospel.

What God will not give
I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
Isaiah 42 v 8

If Christ has been made to rise on your soul, happy are you. You were something darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light. See who did it, and give him the praise. It is the Lord. God gave Christ to be a light to thy soul. Give Him, and Him alone, the glory. 'My glory will I not give to another.' (1) Do not give the praise to yourself. Do not say, my own wisdom or my own prayers have gotten me this. It was all undeserved mercy to the chief of sinners. 'My glory will I not give to another.' (2) Do not give the glory to ministers. They are often the instruments of bringing souls to Christ, but they cannot make Christ arise on the soul, any more than they can make the sun to rise on the earth. We can point to the sun, though we cannot make it rise; so, we can point you to Christ, but cannot make Him rise on your soul. The work is God's and He will have the glory. I believe the work is greatly hindered amongst us from the cause mentioned.
Plead with God to fulfil His word, that Christ may be a light to the nations. It is as easy with God to make Christ rise on many souls as upon one. Show Him that it is for His glory that a nation be born in a day. Give Him no rest till he pour down the Spirit on all our families, till there be a great looking unto Jesus, and rejoicing in Him. Take thine own glory, O Lord; give it to no other, neither thy praise to graven images.
