Daily Reading Preface - Jeremiah, accused of disheartening the people by his prophecies, is cast into the dungeon of Malchiah; out of which he is taken at the earnest entreaty of Ebed-melech. In a secret conference he counselleth the king to save himself and the city by submitting to the Chaldeans. By the king's instructions he concealeth from the princes the matter of the conference. Jeremiah 38 Psalms 11) Preface - David encourageth himself in God against his enemies. The providence and justice of God. Psalms 12) Preface - David complaining of the perfidousness of mankind desireth the help of God: he comforteth himself in the assurance of God's judgments on the wicked, and in the faithfulness of his promises to protect the righteous. Psalms 11-12 Daily Light - Morning I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. Blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. - Ye are the salt of the earth...the light of the world. - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. I also withheld thee from sinning against me. The Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. - So did not I, because of the fear of God. - Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father. - Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Jn. 17.15; Phil. 2.15; Mt. 5.13,14; Mt. 5.16 Ge. 20.6 2 Th. 3.3; Ne. 5.15; Ga. 1.4; Jude 24-25 Daily Light - Evening Whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. {marg. set on high] The LORD is exalted; for he dwelleth on high. - The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens... He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; that he may set him with princes. God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?... For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Pro. 29.25; Isa. 33.5; Ps. 113.4,7-8 Eph. 2.4-6 Ro. 8.32,38-39 A Puritans Catechism Q 72 - How is the Word made effectual to salvation? A - The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the Word, and effectual means of convicting and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort through faith to salvation. The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith Of The Civil Magistrate Chapter 24 PARAGRAPH 2 It is lawful for Christians to accept and execute the office of a magistrate when called thereunto; in the management whereof, as they ought especially to maintain justice and peace,2 according to the wholesome laws of each kingdom and commonwealth, so for that end they may lawfully now, under the New Testament, wage war upon just and necessary occasions.3 2 2 Sam. 23:3; Ps. 82:3–4 3 Luke 3:14 Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The divine Saviour He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1 v 10 He was the Creator of all worlds: 'Without him was not anything made.' He was the Preserver of all worlds: 'By him all things consist,' and hang together. All worlds, therefore, were His domain - He was Lord of all. He could say: 'Every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fullness thereof' (Psalm 50 vs 10-12). All lands sang aloud to Him: the sea roared His praise, the cedars bowed before Him in lowly adoration. Nay, He could say: 'All things that the Father hath are mine' (John 16 v 15); and He could speak to His Father of the glory which He had with Him before the world was. Whatever of power, glory, riches, blessedness, the Father had, dwelt with equal fullness in the Son; for He was in the form of God, and though it no robbery to be equal with God. This was the riches of the Lord Jesus. Oh, brethren! can you trust your salvation to such an one! You heard it was He that undertook to be the surety of sinners, and died for them. Can you trust your soul in the hands of such an one. Ah! surely if so rich and glorious a being undertake for us, He will not fail nor be discouraged, 'till he have set judgement in the earth; and the isles shall wait for his law'.
