-Give thanks to God that we have good news of salvation to tell that the repentant sinner might have everlasting life through Jesus Christ. (John 3.16.) -Pray the Lord would bless the Gospel outreach by the church in Westminster. Both on Saturday mornings and at services. -Pray the Lord would work in the contacts we have made both on Saturday mornings and at services; through personal conversations and online contacts. Daily Readings Preface - Elijah, having tried in vain to persuade Elisha to leave him, with his mantle divideth Jordan, and they both pass over on dry ground. Elijah conditionally alloweth Elisha's request of a double portion of his spirit, and is taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot. Elisha seeth it, and taking up Elijah's mantle divideth again the waters of Jordan, and is acknowledged for Elijah's successor. The young prophets with difficulty obtain leave to seek for Elijah, and return without finding him. Elisha with salt healeth the unwholesome waters of Jericho. Bears destroy the children that mocked him. 2 Kings 2 Preface - Paul warneth the Thessalonians against a groundless surmise that the day of Christ was near at hand; shewing that it would be preceded by a great apostasy, and that the man of sin would be first revealed, and by his wicked impostures draw many into perdition. He repeateth his good hopes concerning them, exhorting them to stand fast in his doctrine, and praying God to comfort and stablish them in all goodness. 2 Thessalonians 2 Daily Light - Morning Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.-Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we sould be called the sons of God. His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things. - If children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. I and my Father are one...the Father is in me, and I in him. - My Father, and your Father; and...my God, and your God. - I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one. The church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Having...these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. perfecting holiness in the fear of God. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. There was...a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them. The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them: and they that exervise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, be that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. - Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Jesus...riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel where-with he was girded. A- They that are effectually called to in this life partake of justification, adoption, and sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Arrange beforehand And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples - Luke 11 v 1 Pray to be taught to pray. Do not be content with old forms that flow from the lips only. Most Christians have need to cast their formal prayers away, to be taught to cry, Abba. Arrange beforehand what you have to pray for. Do not forget confession of sin, nor thanksgiving. Pray to get your closed lips opened in intercession - embrace the whole world and carry it within the vail.

Prayer
-Give thanks to God for many good things we enjoy and daily blessings. -Pray the Lord would supply the needs of those in the congregation at Westminster and guide us as we help those destitute and suffering. Especially those we have met in the pandemic. (Numbers 6.24-26.) Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Reading Preface - Moab rebelleth. Ahaziah's messengers, sent to enquire concerning the event of his sickness of Baal-zebub, are turned back by Elijah, with a sentence of death from the Lord. Ahaziah, apprised of the cause of their quick return, sendeth to apprehend Elijah, who twice calleth down fire from heaven upon those that come against him. Moved by the humble suit of the third captain, and encouraged by an angel, he goeth to the king, and assureth him of his approaching death. Ahaziah dieth, and is succeeded by Jehoram. 2 Kings 1 Preface - The salutation. Paul certifieth the Thessalonians of the good opinion which he had of their faith, love and patience; of the righteous judgment of God in punishing their enemies, and recompensing their sufferings; and of his prayers that God would fulfil his gracious purpose in them. 2 Thessalonians 1 Daily Light - Morning I delight in the law of God after the inward man. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. - Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart. - I sat down under his shadow with great delight and his fruit was sweet to my taste. - I have esteemed the words o this mouth more than my necessary food. I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. - My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes... More to be desire are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. - Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. Ro. 7.22; Ps. 119.97; Jer. 15.16; Song 2.3; Job 23.12; Ps. 40.8; Jn. 4.34 Ps. 19.8,10; Jas. 1.22-23 Daily Light - Morning The LORD thy God accept thee. Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags. - There is none righteous, no, not one... For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood... To declare...at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Accepted in the beloved. - Ye are completer in him. 2 Sa. 24.23; Mi. 6.6-8 Isa. 64.6; Ro. 3.10,23-25,26 Eph. 1.6; Col. 2.10 A Puritans Catechism Q30 - What is effectual calling? A - Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our sills, he does persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ freely offered to us in the gospel. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The sinner's friend In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. - Isaiah 63 v 9 Dear friend, do you feel that Jesus is your Surety and Elder Brother? Then remember that, by reason of His real Divinity, He is now by your bedside, afflicted in all your afflictions, touched with a feeling of your infirmities, and able to save you to the uttermost. He is as really beside you as He was beside Mary when she sat at His fee. Tell Him all your sorrows, all your doubts and anxieties. He has a willing ear. Oh, what a friend is Jesus! the sinner's friend. What an open ear He has for all the wants, doubts, difficulties of His dying disciples. You know how it is with a kind mother, even though a worldly person. In a time of sanger she clasps her children to her breast. In a time of health she may often let them wander out of her sight, but in hours of sickness she will watch beside their bed. Much more will Jesus watch over you. Prayer

Jehoshaphat proposing to enquire of the Lord, the false prophets assure Ahab of success. At Jehoshaphat's request Micaiah is sent for: who foretelleth Ahab's death, and sheweth that his false prophets were possessed by a lying spirit. He is ill treated, and sent to prison. Ahab goeth in disguise to the battle. Jehoshaphat being mistaken for Ahab narrowly escapeth being slain. Ahab is killed by an arrow shot at a venture: the people are dispersed by proclatation. Dogs lick up Ahab's blood, according to Elijah's prophecy. The acts of Ahab, who is succeeded by Ahaziah, Jehoshaphat's good reign: his acts. Jehoshaphat dieth, and is succeeded by Jehoram. Ahaziah's wicked reign. 1 Kings 22 Preface - The apostle proceedeth to show that Christ's coming will be sudden, exhorting Christians to watch and be sober, so as not to be taken by surprise. He beseecheth them to respect their spiritual guides; and giveth various other precepts; concluding with a prayer and salutations. 1 Thessalonians 5 Daily Light - Morning The LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. - The King's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. - When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. - I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. - Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. - My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. The Father...shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever...the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name. - Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him...And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. Phil. 2.1; Job 14.1-2; Ps. 73.26 Jn. 14.16,26; 2 Co. 1.304 1 Th. 4.14,17-18 A Puritans Catechism Q29 - How does the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ? A - The Spirit applies to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The essence of Christianity To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Colossians 1 v 27 Christ in you, means embraced by faith as our righteousness and strength; and this is the sure ground upon which we hope for glory. In this sense it appears to be used, 'That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith.' (Ephesians 3 v 17.). When a sinner's heart is opened by the Holy Spirit, when the beauty and excellence of the Saviour is shown to him, the heart inwardly embraces and cleaves to Christ. Every new discovery of Christ to the soul renews this act of inward cleaving to the Lord Jesus. Every reproach, every temptation, every fall into sin, every bereavement, makes the soul more really, firmly, and fully embrace the Lord Jesus; and so, by continual faith, Christ may be said to dwell in the heart; as in Ephesians 3 v 17, 'That Christ may dwell in your heart by faith.' Christ thus embraced is the hope of glory. It is this constant abiding faith - this close embracing of Christ as all our righteousness - it is this which gives a calm, sweet, full, peaceful hope of glory. The soul that can say Christ is mine, can also say, Glory is mine; for we need nothing but Christ to shelter us in the judgement day. Can you say that Christ is thus in you the hope of glory? If you have not got Christ, you have no good hope of glory. Prayer

Jezebel comforteth him, and procureth Naboth to be stoned to death upon a false accusation of blasphemy. She sendeth Ahab to take possession of the vineyard. Elijah is sent to meet him, and denounceth God's judgments against Ahab and Jezebel for their wickedness. Ahab humbling himself before God, the punishment is deferred to his son's days. 1 Kings 21 Preface - Paul exhorteth the Thessalonians to proceed in their endeavours to please God by a holy and just conversation. He commendeth their love to one another, entreating them to abound in it, and quietly to follow their respective callings. And that they might not sorrow for the dead, as men without hope, he briefly describeth the resurrection of the just, and Christ's second coming. 1 Thessalonians 4 Daily Light - Morning One of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you. - The life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your soul. - It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. And (Jesus) said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. - By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. - Peace through the blood of his cross. Ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold...but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot...manifest in these last times for you. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean....from all your idols, will I cleanse you. - Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience. Amen: the LORD God...say so too. - He who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth (Heb. God of Amen); and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth. (Heb. God of Amen). When God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself... For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness. - For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever... Amen, and Amen. A - We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effectual application of it to us by his Holy Spirit. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The blood of Jesus But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin - 1 John 1 v 7 You need the blood of Jesus as much as at the first. You never can stand before God in yourself. You must go again and again to be washed; even on your dying bed you must hide under Jehovah, our Righteousness. You must also lean upon Jesus. He alone can overcome in you. Keep nearer and nearer every day. Prayer
-Give thanks to God for those who have recently recovered from sickness. -Pray for those who are sick or receiving treatment in our congregation. --Pray that we each would walk close to God, putting off sins that easily beset us and that we would daily give thanks for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. By a prophet's direction the Syrians are smitten. According as the prophet had forewarned Ahab, the Syrians next year come against him in Aphek, in confidence of better success in the plain than on the hills. A prophet declaring it beforehand to be a special judgment on them, they are again defeated with a great slaughter. They entreat submissively to Ahab, who receiveth Ben-hadad kindly, and sendeth him away with a covenant of peace. A prophet, having first by a parable brought Ahab to condemn himself, denounceth God's judgment against him for his unseasonable lenience. 1 Kings 20 Preface - The apostle sheweth that out of his great care for the Thessalonians he had sent Timothy to comfort and strengthen them in the faith; whose good report of them had been a great consolation to him in his distresses. He testifieth his thankfulness to God, and earnest desire to see them; praying God to guide him to them, and for their increase in love and holiness unto the end. 1 Thessalonians 3 Daily Light - Morning In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted. In the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory. - Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart. The righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe... To declare...at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. - Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, y rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Ps 89.16; Isa. 45.24-25; Ps. 32.11 Ro. 3.21-22,26 Phil. 4.4; 1 Pe.1.8 Daily Light - Evening Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty... Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting. The LORD is...great in power. - If God be for us, who can be against us? - Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us...and he will deliver us. - My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. - Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory. - Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all... Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name. But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given the.. A - Christ's exaltation consists in his rising again from the dead on the third day, in ascending up into heaven, in sitting at the right hand of God the Father, and in coming to judge the world at the last day. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings True divine peace Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. - Romans 5 v 1 Justified by faith we have peace wit God - not peace with ourselves - not peace with the world, with sin, with Satan, but peace with God. True divine peace is to be found only in believing - only in keeping fast hold of Christ. If you let Him go, you let go your righteousness; for this is His name. You are then without righteousness - without a covering from the wrath of God - without a way to the Father. The law again condemn you; God's frown will again overshadow you; you will again have terrors of conscience. Hold Him then, and do not let Him go. Whatever you let go, let not Christ go; for He is our peace - not in knowledge - not in feeling - but trust in Him alone. Daily Prayer
-Give thanks to God for salvation and the redemption that is found alone through Jesus Christ. -Give thanks to God for granting us particular skills and abilities that we might fulfil our vocations (jobs, studies, family responsibilities and time we spend alone). (Ecclesiastes 9.10, Ephesians 6.6) -Pray for the Lord's blessing on the working week for us and all in the congregation. -Pray the Lord would grant us grace to be good ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5.20) Church Services Sermons Sunday morning at 11:00am in church (also available online via Facebook) Sunday evening at 6:30pm in church (also available online via Facebook) Bible study and prayer Wednesday evening at 7:00pm online via Zoom (also available online via Facebook) Lunch hour service Thursday afternoon between 1:00pm and 1:30pm in church (also available online via Facebook) Outreach/Witnessing Saturday morning at Victoria Street (outside the big Boots store) for 10:30am (across the road from Town Hall - No. 64). In the wilderness he groweth weary of life, but being twice strengthened by food brought him by an angel, he reacheth Horeb after having fasted forty days and forty nights. At Horeb God appeareth unto him, and commissioneth him to anoint Hazael, Jehu, and Elisha. He meeteth Elisha, who taking leave of his friends followeth him. 1 Kings 19 Preface - The salutation. Paul sheweth his thankful remembrance of the Thessalonians in his prayers on account of their faith, charity and patience: applauding them for their exemplary reception of the gospel, and improvement under it. 1 Thessalonians 1 Daily Light - Morning Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. - Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. - Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. - Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? - The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. We desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. - So run, that ye may obtain. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool but shoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neighter tempteth he any man: but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. - Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you. Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where...even as the garden of the LORD... Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan... But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. - (God) delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked... The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations. - Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. A - Christ's humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross; in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Reflect His image He that shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly , and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6 v 8 God requires His redeemed ones to be holy. - If you are His brethren, He will have you righteous, holy men, First, He requires you to do justly - to be just in your dealings between man and man. This is one of His own glorious features. He is a just God. 'Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?' 'He is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.' Are you come to Him by Jesus? - He requires you to reflect His image. Are you His child? - you must be like Him. O brethren, be exact in your dealings. Be like you God. Take care of dishonesty; take care of trickery in business. Take care of crying up your goods when selling them, and crying them down when buying them. 'It is nought, it is nought, sayeth the buyer, but when he is gone his way, he boasteth.' It shall not be so among you. God requires you to do justly. Secondly, He requires you to love mercy. - This is the brightest feature in the character of Christ. If you are in Christ, drink deep of His Spirit; God requires you to be merciful. The world is selfish, unmerciful. An unconverted mother has no mercy on the soul of her own child. She can see it dropping into hell without mercy. O the hellish cruelty of unconverted men. It shall not be so with you. Be merciful, as your Father in heaven is merciful. Thirdly, He requires you to walk humbly with thy God. - Christ says, 'Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart.' If God has covered all your black sins - rebellions - backslidings - out -breakings; then never open you mouth except in humble praise. God requires this at your hand. Walk with God, and walk humbly. Dear Congregation,
Thank you all for your prayers and support for the work of the church throughout 2023. I know we all have been through varying difficulties and some through particular hardships. Once again we can thank the Lord that we have been brought through trusting in the Lord as our refuge and strength. As I encouraged the congregation at the start of last year it is vitally important to pray to keep close to God and continue faithfully in our Christian life. Alongside reading teh Scriptures these should be our daily routine. There are various encouragements in the Scriptures to pray: -Pray without ceasing (1 Th. 5:17). -Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints: (Ep. 6:18). -Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; (Col. 4:2). These are a few verses of the amny that encourage us to pray and undoubtedly set before us a biblical mandate that we should be concerned to pray. Maybe you have fallen out of the 'habit' or relegated prayer to a part time practice; or you only pray when trouble or danger comes. May these verses challenge us all at the start of this new year to be a people of prayer. To that end I would ask the church to pray, if led, the suggested topics below so we might pray for the same things (roughly speaking) on teh same day to encourage us. Let us be prayerful people and realise we too need prayer. To say we are praying for someone should be an expression of concern but an indication of our own action to bring the matter before God, before the throne of Grace through the believers mediatior and High Priest, Jesus Christ. Paul even requests prayer for himself and those labouring for the Gospel with him twice in 1 and 2 Thessalonians saying 'brethren pray for us'. May we this be a prayerful church and prayerful individuals, knowing that we have a prayer hearing and answering God. Pastor Jonathan Arnold Prayer -God thanks to God for His character, perfect, unchangeable, the same yesterday today and forever. -Give thanks to God that we can meet in the church and have fellowship with one another. -Pray the Lord would grant the preaching of his word power and clarity, and there are ready ears to hear and believe it. (2 Thes. 3.1) -Pray we would be granted faithful ministry and good spiritual food from God's Word. (1 Peter 2.2.) The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; the God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour. - The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. - We may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? - As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. - Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. For thy name's sake lead me, and guide me. Ps. 59.9; 2 Sa. 22.2-3; Ps. 28.7 Isa. 59.19; He. 13.6 Pe. 27.1; Ps. 125.2: Ps. 63.7 Ps. 31.3 Daily Light - Evening Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. - O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. - Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. - You...blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. - Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Mt. 6.12; Mt. 18.21-22; Mt 12.32-35; Eph. 4.32; Col 2.13-14; Col. 3.13 Daily Reading Preface - In the extremity of the famine Elijah is sent to meet Ahab. Ahab and Obadiah go different ways in search of pasture for the cattle. Elijah meeteth Obadiah, and sendeth him to call Ahab. Ahab, after receiving a reproof, by Elijah's direction gathereth together all the prophets of Baal. Elijah proposeth to decide by a sign from heaven between the Lord and Baal. Baal's prophets invoke him in vain. Elijah praying is answered by fire from heaven: the people own the Lord to be God: Baal's prophet's are slain. Elijah giveth Ahab notice of rain, which he obtaineth by prayer, and runneth before Ahab to Jezreel. 1 Kings 18 Preface - After saluting the saints at Colosse, Paul testifieth his thankfulness to God for the good account he had heard of their faith and love; and his continual prayers for their improvement in spiritual knowledge, right practice, and thanksgiving to God for the benefits of redemption by his Son. He sheweth them the exalted nature and mediatorial office of Christ, by whom they, who were once enemies, were now reconciled, if they continued true to the gospel, whereof he Paul was made a minister to preach it to the Gentiles. 1 Thessalonians 1 A Puritans Catechism Q25 - Wherein did Christ's humiliation consist? A - Christ's humiliation consisted in his being born, and that in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, and the cursed death of the cross, in being buried, and continuing under the power of death for a time. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings The broken heart The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, who wilt not despise. - Psalm 51 v 17 No Psalm expresses more fully the experience of a penitent believing soul: - First, His humbling confession of sin, (vs. 3-5). Second, His intense desire for pardon through the blood of Christ, (v.7). Third, His longing after a clean heart, (v.10). Fourth, His desire to render something to God for all His benefits. 1.He says, I will teach transgressors the ways. 2. My lips shall show forth thy praise. 3. He will give a broken heart, vs. 16, 17. Just as, long ago, they used to offer slain lambs in token of thanksgiving, so he says he will offer up to God a slain and broken heart. Every one of you, who has found the same forgiveness, should come to the same resolution - offer up to God this day a broken heart. Prayer

He is afterwards sent to a widow of Zarephath, and miraculously reneweth her barrel of meal and cruise of oil. The widow's son dieth, and is restored to life by Elijah's prayer: the woman believeth him to be sent from God. 1 Kings 17 Preface - The duty of masters toward their servants. A general exhortation to perseverance in prayer; discreet conduct, and well-ordered speech. The apostle commendeth Tychicus and Onesimus, by whom he sent this epistle: and concludeth with various salutations, and a blessing. Colossians 4 Daily Light - Morning Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. It pleased the LORD to bruise him: he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand, He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. - Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? - We thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: and that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. Let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. - Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, who by him do believe in God. Ro. 14.9; Isa. 53.10-11; Lu. 24.26; 2 Co. 5.14-15 Ac. 2.36; 1 Pe. 1.20-21 Daily Light - Evening Give us this day our daily bread. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. - Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. - The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in teh evening; and he drank of the brook. My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. - Be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna...that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. - Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him Lord, evermore give us this berad. A - Christ executes the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Hidden O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. - Song of Solomon 2 v 14 As timorous dove pursued by the vulture, and well nigh made a prey, with fluttering anxious wing, hides itself deeper than ever in the clefts of the rock, and in the secret places of the precipice, so the backslidden believer, whom Satan has desired to have, that he might sift him as wheat, when he is restored once more to the all gracious presence of his Lord, clings to Him with fluttering, anxious faith, and hides himself deeper than ever in the wounds of his Saviour. Thus it was that the fallen Peter, when he had so grievously denied his Lord, yet, when brought again within sight of the Saviour, standing upon the shore, was the only one of the disciples who girt his fisher's coat unto him, and cast himself into the sea to swim to Jesus; and just as that backslidden apostle, when again he had hidden himself in the clefts of the Rock of Ages, found that the love of Jesus was more tender towards him than ever, when he began that conversation, which, more than all the others in the Bible, combines the kindest of reproofs with the kindest of encouragements, 'Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?' just so does every backslidden believer find, that when again he is hidden in the freshly opened wounds of his Lord, the fountain of His love begins to flow afresh, and the stream of kindness and affection is fuller and more overflowing than ever, for His word is, 'Oh, my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the precipice, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.' He executeth Jehu's prophecy against Baasha's house. Omri, made king by the army, besiegeth Zimri in Tirzah, who in despair burneth himself. The people being divided. Joshua's curse fulfilled upon Hiel the builder of Jericho. 1 Kings 16 Preface - The apostle exhorteth to be heavenly minded, to mortify carnal lusts, and to put away all malice and ill dealing in respect of one another, as becometh Christians; he recommendeth brotherly kindness, charity, and other general duties. The relative duties of wives, and husbands of children, and parents: and of servants toward their master. Colossians 3 Daily Light - Morning From the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard. Thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spiritof the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. - The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. - Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. - Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. - God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me. Dan. 10.12; Isa 57.15; Ps. 51.17; Ps. 138.6; 1 Pe. 5.6; Jas. 4.6-7 Ps. 86.5-7 Daily Light - Evening Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Understanding what the will of the Lord is. It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. This is the will of God, even you sanctification. - That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. - Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth...Wherefore lay apart all filthiness. Be ye holy; for I am holy. - (Jesus said) Whosoever shall do the will of God the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother. - Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a roce: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. - The world passeth away, and lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Faultness Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy. - Jude v 24 My heart sometimes sickens when I think upon the defects of believers; when I think of one Christian being fond of company, another vain, another given to evil speaking, O aim to be holy Christians! - bright, shining Christians. The heaven is more adorned by the large bright constellations than by many insignificant stars; so God may be more glorified by one bright Christian than by many indifferent ones. Aim at being that one. Soon we shall be faultless. He that begun will perform it. We shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. On account of the war between him and Baasha he maketh a league with Ben-hadad king of Syria, who causeth Baasha to desist from building Ramah; Asa with the stones thereof buildeth Geba and Mizpah, Asa dieth and is succeeded by Jehoshaphat. Nadab's wicked reign. He is slain by Baasha, who succeedeth him, and executeth Ahijah's prophecy against Jeroboam's house. Baasha's wicked reign. 1 Kings 15 Preface- Paul testifieth his solicitude for the churches which had not seen him, that they might be united in love, and attain a perfect knowledge of the Christian revelation, not being seduced from their stedfastness in the faith, nor corrupted throu philosophy and human traditions. He sheweth that they were already complete in Christ, having attained the true circumcision figured in baptism; that God had quickened them with Christ, and both abolished the law of ordinances, that was against them, and also spoiled principalities and powers. He therefore urgeth them not to submit to legal ordinances, which were but a shadow of Christ; nor to the worship of angels, and other vain practices of human devising. Colossians 2 Daily Light - Morning God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. It pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; and, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself. - Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil. - Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity...? Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace. - Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. - LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us. In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. - A stone...cut out without hands. - Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. - The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God... So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; and should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how...But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come. Be ye...ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings A glorious garment But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. - Luke 15 v 22 As long as you live in your mortal body, you will be faulty in yourself. It is a soul ruining error to believe anything else. O if ye would be wise, be often looking beneath the robe of the Redeemer's righteousness to see your own deformity. It will make you keep faster hold of His robe, and keep you washing in the fountain. Now, when Christ brings you before the throne of God, He will clothe you with His own fine linen, and present you faultless. O it is sweet to me to think how soon you shall be the righteousness of God in Him. What a glorious righteousness that can stand the light of God's face! Sometimes a garment appears white in dim light; when you bring it into sunshine you see the spots. O prize, then, this Divine righteousness, which is your covering. |
