Prayer
-Give thanks to God for those who have recently recovered from sickness. -Pray for those who are sick or receiving treatment in our congregation. -Pray that we each would walk close to God, putting off sins that easily beset us and that we would daily give thanks for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (1 John 1.3; Hebrews 12.1; 1 Thes 5.16.) Church Services Sermons Sunday morning at 11:00am in church (also available online via Facebook) Sunday evening at 6:30pm in church (also available online via Facebook) Bible study and prayer Wednesday evening at 7:00pm - This week ( Wednesday 23rd) will be online via Zoom Lunch hour service Thursday between 1:00pm and 1:30pm in church (also online via Facebook) Outreach/witnessing Saturday morning at Victoria Street (outside the big Boots store) for 10:30am (across the road from Town Hall - No. 64). Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Reading Preface - Jonathan, without the knowledge of his father or any of the people, attended by his armourbearer only, smiteth the Philistine garrison. The Philistines seized with a panic beat down one another. Saul perceiving the tumult enquireth of God, but without waiting for teh priest's answer setteth upon the enemy, and is joined by the Hebrews, and by the Israelites out of their hiding places. His ill-advised adjuring of the people is a hindrance of the victory. The people, faint for want of food, fly upon the spoil, and are hardly restrained from eating the blood. Saul buildeth an altar; he asketh counsel of God, but receiveth no answer. Jonathan taken by lot, and sentenced to die, is rescued by the people. Saul's victories. His family. 1 Samuel 14 Preface - Paul exhorteth to holiness and conformity to God's will: and to think soberly of the gifts allotted every man respectively. We are all members of one body in Christ, and should diligently exercise our several gifts for the common benefit. Various practical duties recommended. Revenge is specially forbidden, and to do good for evil injoined. Romans 12 A Puritans Catechism Q55 - Which is the sixth commandment? A - The sixth commandment is, Thou shalt not kill. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings When a believer falls But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9 v 27 As long as a believer walks humbly with his God, his soul is at peace. The candle of the Lord shines on his head. He walks in the light as God walks in the light, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth him from all sin. But the moment that unbelief creeps in, he is led away into sin - like David, he falls very low. A believer generally falls lower than the world; and now he falls into darkness. When Adam fell, he was afraid; and he hid himself from God among the trees of the garden, and made a covering of leaves. Alas! when a believer falls, he is also afraid - he hides from God. Now he has lost a good conscience, he fears to meet with God; he does not love the house of prayer; his heart is filled with suspicions. He says to himself: 'If I had been a child of God, would God have given me up to my own heart's lusts?' He refuses to return. 'There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.' Though God has never been a wilderness or a land of darkness to the soul, yet he says: 'W are lords; we will come no more unto thee.' The Lord hath forsaken me, and my God hath forgotten me.' Ah! This is the bitterest of all kinds of desertion. If you put away faith and a good conscience, you will make shipwreck.

Prayer
-Give thanks to God for salvation and the redemption that is found alone through Jesus Christ. -Give thanks to God for granting us particular skills and abilities that we might fulfil our vocations (jobs, studies, family responsibilities and time we spend alone). (Ecclesiastes 9.10, Ephesians 6.6) -Pray for the Lord's blessing on the working week for us and all in the congregation. -Pray the Lord would grant us grace to be good ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5.20) Church Services Sermons Sunday morning at 11:00am in church (also available online via Facebook) Sunday evening at 6:30pm in church (also available online via Facebook) Bible study and prayer Wednesday evening at 7:00pm - this Wednesday (23rd August 2023) online via Zoom Lunch hour service Thursday between 1:00pm and 1:30pm Outreach/Witnessing Saturday morning at Victoria Street (outside the big Boots store) for 10:30am (across the road from Town Hall - No. 64). Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Reading Preface - Saul's select band. Jonathan smiteth the Philistines' garrison, whereupon the people are called together to Gilgal. The Philistines bring a great host into the field. The distress of the Israelites. Saul weary of staying for Samuel offereth a burnt offering. His excuse to Samuel, who sharply reproveth him. The Philistines send out three bands of spoilers. The policy of the Philistines in suffering no smith in Israel. 1 Samuel 13 Preface - Paul exhorteth the Corinthians to follow him, as he did Christ. He praiseth them for observing the rules he had given them; and forbiddeth men to pray or prophesy with heads covered, and women with heads uncovered; the covering of the head being a token of subjection. He blameth them for abuses in their religious assemblies, particularly for their divisions, and profanation of the Lord's supper. He remindeth them of the first institution thereof, and sheweth the danger of partaking of it unworthily. Romans 11 A Puritans Catechism Q54 - What is the reason annexed to the fifth commandment? A - The reason annexed to the fifth commandment is, a promise of long life and prosperity - as far as it shall serve for God's glory and their own good - to all such as keep this commandment. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Death of Stephen And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit - Acts 7 v 59 Stephen was the first to die as a martyr in the cause of Christ; and he seems to have resembled the Saviour more than any that followed after. His very face appeared like the face of an angel. His irresistible wisdom in arguing with the Jews was very like Christ. His praying for his enemies with his dying breath nearly in the same words as the Saviour and his recommending his soul into the hands of the Lord Jesus, were in the same spirit of confidence as that in which Christ said: 'Father, into Thy hands I commend my spirit.' There cannot be a doubt that it was by looking unto Jesus that he became thus Christ like. And the last view which he got of Christ seems especially to have given him that heavenly composure in dying which is so much above nature. Two things are to be noticed: 1 - that it was a sight of Christ at the right hand of God; 2 - that it was a sight of Christ standing there. Christ being at the right hand of God is mentioned sixteen times in the Bible; thirteen times He is described as seated there, twice as being there; but here only is He spoken of as standing. This appears to have made a deep and lively impression on the mind of Stephen, for he cries out: 'Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God'; and then, with a sweet assurance that Christ's hands were stretched out to receive him, he cried: 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.' Prayer
-God thanks to God for His character, perfect, unchangeable, the same yesterday today and forever. -Give thanks to God that we can meet in the church and have fellowship with one another. -Pray the Lord would grant the preaching of his word power and clarity, and there are ready ears to hear and believe it(2 Thes. 3.1.) -Pray we would be granted faithful ministry and good spiritual food from God's Word. And afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily reading Preface - Samuel calleth upon the people, and receiveth from them an ample justification of his integrity. He chargeth them with ingratitude in rejecting God's government, and warneth them against future disobedience. To convince them of their offence in asking a king, he calleth for thunder and rain in the time of harvest to their great dismay; but encourageth them with the assurance of divine favour, if they will but fear the Lord, and serve him heartily. 1 Samuel 12 Preface - Paul's prayer for Israel, who were misled by blind zeal. The difference between justification by the law and by faith explained from scripture. Salvation open to all that believe, both Jews and Gentiles. The necessity of preaching to the Gentiles inferred. God's acceptance of the Gentiles known before to the Jews, as also their own refusal of his offered mercy. Romans 10 A Puritans Catechism Q53 - What is required in the fifth commandment? A - The fifth commandment requires the preserving the honour, and performing the duties, belonging to everyone in their several places and relations, as superiors, inferiors or equals. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Inseparable Christ But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. - Luke 10 v 42 Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Everything else can be taken away from you, your money, your friends, etc: but if you have once embraced the Lamb of God, you have that good part which shall never be taken away from you. You are chosen to 'an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away.' Then we can say without any fear, 'The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage.' Prayer
-Give thanks to God that we have good news of salvation to tell that the repentant sinner might have everlasting life through Jesus Christ. (John 3.16.) -Pray the Lord would bless the Gospel outreach by the church in Westminster. Both on Saturday mornings and at services. -Pray the Lord would work in the contacts we have made both on Saturday mornings and at services; through personal conversations and online contacts. Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Reading Preface - Nahash the Ammonite making war against Jabesh-gilead proposeth very reproachful terms to the inhabitants, who petition for a respite of seven days. They send to Saul, who bringeth them succours, and smiteth the Ammonites. The people call for the death of those who had vilifield Saul, to which Saul will by no means consent. His kingdom is joyfully renewed to him at Gilgal. 1 Samuel 11 Preface - Paul professeth an unfeigned sorrow for the Jewish nation: but proveth by instances from scripture that the promise of Abraham did not necessarily include all his descendants: asserting that there is no unrighteousness in God's bestowing his unmerited bounty on whom he pleaseth: and that he was unquestionably free to suspend his judgment, where deserved, either for the more signal display of his power in taking vengeance on some, or of his mercy in calling others to glory. The calling of the Gentiles, and rejection of the Jews, foretold. Accordingly the Gentiles have attained the righteousness of faith, which the Jews refused. The cause of such refusal. Romans 9 A Puritans catechism Q52 - Which is the fifth commandment? A - The fifth commandment is, Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Love beyond compare Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. Song of Solomon 1 v 2 There is no love in this world like a mother's love. It is free, unbought, unselfish love. However much pain she has suffered on her Child's account however many troubles she has to bear for it, by night and by day, while it hangs upon her breast, still it is moreprecious than gold. There is something in her heart that clings to her weak, sickly, nay, even to her retarded boy. God's love to a soul in Christ is stronger than this love. The Psalmist compares it to a father's: 'Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.' And Malachi 3 v 17: 'I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.' Again, Isaiah 66 v 13: 'As one whom his other comforteth, so will I comfort you.' Prayer
-Give thanks to God for many good things we enjoy and daily blessings. -Pray the Lord would supply the needs of those in the congregation at Westminster and guide us as we help those destitute and suffering. Especially those we have met in the pandemic. And afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Readings Preface - Saul the son of Kish is sent to seek his father's asses which were lost, and despairing to find them is counselled by his servant to apply to Samuel. He is directed by some young maidens where to meet with him. Samuel, having been told by God both of his coming and of his appointment to the kingdom, entertaineth him at a feast with great respect; and on the morrow, after a private conversation, bringeth him on his way. 1 Samuel 10 Preface - Under the gospel we are free from condemnation, walking after the Spirit. The evil of being carnally minded, and the good of being spiritually minded. Christian's have God's Spirit to guide and assist them; by which if they mortify the flesh, they shall live. For they that are led by the Spirit are sons of God, and heirs of glory; and even they who have the first-fruits of the Spirit do still long after it; the Spirit in the mean time aiding their infirmities in prayer. Nevertheless the final good of them that fear God is all along pursued, being foreordained of God and brought about according to the course of his providence. The ground and assurance of the Christian's hope. Romans 8 A Puritans Catechism Q51 - How is the sabbath to be sanctified? A - The sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days; and spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God's worship, except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings O worship the King Praise ye the Lord, Praise the Lord, O my soul. - Psalms 146 v 1 Believers should praise God for what He is in Himself. Those that have never seen the Lord cannot praise Him. Those that have not come to Christ, have never seen the King in His beauty. An unconverted man sees no liveliness in God. He sees a beauty in the bluey sky, in the glorious sun, in the green earth, in the spangling stars, in the lily of the field; but he sees no beauty in God. He hath not seen in Him, neither known Him; therefore there is no melody of praise in that heart. When a sinner is brought to Christ, he is brought to the Father. Jesus gave himself for us, 'that he might bring us to God.' O! what a sight breads in upon the soul - the infinite, eternal, unchangeable God! I know that some of you have been brought to see this sight. Prayer
-Give thanks to God for the Bible, its inspiration and preservation for us to read it today. (2 Timothy 3.16, Proverbs 30.5.) -Give thanks to God that we have easy access to the Scripture in English, in our mother tongue. -Pray the Lord would bless us as we study the Bible through the ministry this coming year. That as we work through a book of the Bible the Lord would continue to help us to grasp God's truth. -Pray for the Lunchtime outreach service and those who attend; pray that more from the offices nearby and Christians who commute are able to join us. Samuel, having been told by God both of his coming and of his appointment to the kingdom, entertaineth him at a feast with great respect; and on the morrow, after a private conversation, bringeth him on his way. 1 Samuel 9 Preface - No law having power over a person longer than he liveth, we therefore, being become dead to the law by the body of Christ, are left free to place ourselves under a happier dispensation. For the law through the prevalency of corrupt passions could only serve as an instrument of sin unto death; although it be in itself holy, and just, and good; as is manifest by our reason approving the precepts of it, whilst our depraved nature is unable to put them in practice. The wretchedness of man in such a situation and God's mercy in his deliverance from it through Christ. Romans 7 A Puritans Catechism Q50 - What is required in the fourth commandment? A - The fourth commandment requires the keeping holy to God such set times as he has appointed in his Word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a holy sabbath to himself. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings My Beloved is mine My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies. - Song of Solomon 2 v 16 If any man ask, 'How darest thou, sinful man, to call that divine Saviour thins?' the answer is here, 'For I am His.' He chose me from all eternity, wise I never would have chosen Him. He sought after me, else I never would have sought after Him. He hath loved me, therefore I love Him. He hath chosen me, therefore I evermore choose Him. 'My beloved is mine.' Prayer

And afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily reading 1 Samuel 7 Preface - The ark is brought into the house of Abinadab at Kirjathjearim, where it is kept by one of his sons, and abideth twenty years. At the exhortation of Samuel the Israelites solemnly repent at Mizpeh. The people are alarmed with an irruption of the Philistines. While Samuel prayeth and sacrifieth, the Lord discomfiteth the Philistines with thunder at Eben-ezer. The Philistines are subdued. Samuel peaceably and religiously judgeth Israel. 1 Samuel 8 - Preface - By occasion of the ill government of Samuel's sons the Israelites desire a king. Samuel is displeased, and prayeth; he is comforted by God, but withal admonished to hearken unto the people's request. He setteth before them by God's command the manner in which they must expect a king to rule over them. The people still continue their imprtunity, and God directeth Samuel to yield to them. 1 Samuel 7-8 Preface - Though justified by grace, we may not live in sin; since the very figure of batism requireth us to die with Christ unto sin, that we may lead a new life of holiness unto God. The dispensation of grace freeth us from the dominion of sin; but we are still the servants of sin, if we obey it; therefore being freed from sin, we are bound unto holiness. The end and wages of sin is death; but the fruit of holiness through God's grace is eternal life. Romans 6 A Puritans Catechism Q49 - Which is the fourth commandment? A - The fourth commandment is , Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservent, no thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Temporal judgements For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? - 1 Peter 4 v 17 There are some sins which God visits with temporal judgements, as weakness of body, sickness, and death. When Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Ghost, they fell down dead at the apostles' feet. When Herod gave not God the glory, he was eaten up of worms, and died upon his throne. So it is especially in profaning the Lord's table. This is God's word, who knows best: 'For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.' Prayer
-Give thanks to God for those who have recently recovered from sickness. -Pray for those who are sick or receiving treatment in our congregation. -Pray that we each would walk close to God, putting off sins that easily beset us and that we would daily give thanks for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily reading 1 Samuel 5-Preface - The Philistines bring the ark into the house of Dagon at Ashdod. Dagon is cast down and broken in pieces before the ark. The men of Ashdod are smitten with emerods. The ark being carried to Gath, the men of Gath are smitten with the like plague; as also the men of Ekran, when the ark is brought thither. 1 Samuel 6-Preface - The Philistines bring the ark into the house of Dagon at Ashdod. Dagon is cast down and broken in pieces before the ark: The men of Ashdod are smitten with emerods. The ark being carried to Gath, the men of Gath are smitten with the like plague; as also the men of Ekron, when the ark is brought thither. 1 Samuel 5-6 Preface - Being justified by faith, we glory in our hope; and in present afflictions; from the past experience of God's love, looking with more assurance for final salvation: we glory in God also, to whom we are reconciled by Christ. As sin and death came upon all men by Adam, so the grace of God, which justifieth unto life, cometh more abundantly unto all mankind through Christ. Under the law sin abounded unto death; but grace hath much more abounded unto life. Romans 5 A Puritans Catechism Q48 - What is required in the third commandment? A - The third commandment requires the holy and reverent use of God's names, titles, attributes, ordinances, Word, and works. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings Here in is love! But the Lord said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. - 1 Samuel 16 v 7 He was the only one that knew the wickedness of the beings for whom He died. He that searches the hearts of sinners died for them. His eye alone had searched their hearts; ay, was searching, at the time He came. He knew what was in men; yet He not abhor them on that account - He died for them. It was not for any goodness in man that He died for man. He saw none. It was not that He saw little sin in the heart of man. He is only being in the universe that saw all the sin that is in the unfathomable heart of man. He saw to the bottom of the volcano - and yet He came and died for man. Herein is love! When publicans and sinners came to Him on earth, He knew what was in their hearts. His eye had rested on their bosoms all their life. He had seen all the lusts and passions that had ever rankled there. Yet in no wise did He cast them out. So with you. His eye has seen all your sins - the vilest, darkest, blackest hours you have lived, His pure eye was resting on you. Yet he died for such, and invites you to come to Him, and will in no wise cast you out. Prayer
-Give thanks to God for salvation and the redemption that is found alone through Jesus Christ. -Give thanks to God for granting us particular skills and abilities that we might fulfil our vocations (jobs, studies, family responsibilities and time we spend alone). Afterwards we go back to church for prayer. Daily Reading Preface - The Israelites are smitten by the Philistines at Eben-ezer. They fetch the ark to the terror of their enemies; but are smitten again, the ark taken, and the two sons of Eli slain. Upon hearing the news Eli falleth backward, and breaketh his neck. The wife of Phinehas through grief falleth in labour, is delivered of I-chabod, and dieth. 1 Samuel 4 Preface - Abraham himself was justified by faith: which was imputed to him for righteousness before circumcision, that he might be the common father of believers, whether circumcised or not. The promise was not given him through the law; else had it been void from the very nature of the law; but being of faith by grace is sure to all the destined seed, and not to those of the law only. The acceptableness of Abraham's faith; which stands recorded not for his sake only, but for the sake of all who shall profess a like faith in God through Christ. Romans 4 A Puritans Catechism Q47 - Which is the third commandment? A - The third commandment is, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings A New creature He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shalt be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. - John 14 v 21. You are greatly mistaken if you think that to be a Christian is merely to have certain views and convictions and spiritual delights. This is all well; but if it leads not to a devoted life, I fear it is a delusion. 'If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.' Prayer

Samuel is favoured by God, and acknowledged for a prophet in Israel. 1 Samuel 3 Preface - The Jew's prerogative; which is not vacated by the unbelief of some; nor is God's justice impeached in punishing their sinfulness. The law itself convinceth the Jews also universally of sin; so that no flesh is justified by the deeds of the law; but all indiscriminately by God's grace through faith in Christ: yet without annulling the obligations of the law. Romans 3 A Puritans Catechism Q46 - What is forbidden in the second commandment? A - The second commandment forbids the worshiping of God by images, or any other way not appointed in his Word. Robert Murray M'Cheyne - God Makes A Path - Daily Devotional Readings See the end Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. - John 13 v 7 Perhaps you will say that they are an afflicted people. Some in poverty, some bereaved, some groaning on sick-beds. True, God dealeth with them as with sons. Often they cry 'These things are against me.' But really all is for them. If we could see the end as God does, we would see that every event is for the believer. When we get to the haven, we will see that every wind was wafting us to glory. |
